Sports injuries usually result from either overactivity, improper training or technique. Most common sports injuries usually involve the muscles, ligaments, fascia, and bursae.
A pulled muscle is another name for a muscle strain that occurs when a muscle is unduly stretched resulting in a tear. Symptoms of a muscle strain include, chronic pain, swelling, difficulty in movements. Common sites of strain include the groin, hamstring, calves, lower back and shoulder.
Most common muscle strains though recover with RICE i.e rest, ice, compression and elevation. Most muscle overuse injuries result from improper fitness for the particular activity.
If a strain or sprain is severe, the torn ligament may take months to heal.
Football and hockey is associated with groin pull. Allowing rest, along with ice should help relieve the pain. However if there is swelling in the groin do visit your doctor immediately
This is another type of injury that can result from sharply kicking out while actually running. The biggest problem with hamstring pull is that, it may take up to 12 months to actually heal. This is because the muscle is constantly firing while we walking.
The ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) is an important tendon that holds and stabilizes the knee joint. This injury can occur when you are hot on your knee from the side. You may hear a ‘POP’ sound. These injuries definitely require surgeries to fix. Post surgery, aggressive physiotherapy is also a must
As the name indicates, this problem occurs among golfers resulting in something called epicondylitis. The treatment though is fairly straightforward i.e staying away from the golf court
If you have an aching pain on the inner aspect of your lower leg. This happens when you are just getting used to running and when the muscles around the tibia get inflamed. Use of pain medication, ice and proper footwear will usually provide relief from the condition
A stress fracture can occur in any sport. These high impact fractures occur due to undue abuse of the muscles beyond its ability causing the pressure to be transmitted to the bone and resulting in a fracture.
Rest and appropriate immobilization is usually the best way to allow stress fractures to heal.
