Signs you may need a knee replacement

Hello!

And welcome to One Care Medical Center, an international orthopedic hospital in Coimbatore. My name is Dr. Salam and I am a full time practicing orthopedic surgeon in Coimbatore.

In this post, we are going to discuss some common signs that suggest that you may need a knee replacement surgery.

So the truth is, knee osteoarthritis develops slowly and can be a seriously debilitating condition. This is because knee osteoarthritis destroys the knee joint severely and permanently. It also destroys the quality of life.

Pain with activity

Knee pain can manifest in many ways. Pain that manifests with increasing activity is a clear sign of the knee joint wear and tear.

Pain that is delayed

In some instances, pain can be delayed. Here the pain comes in after a period of aggressive activity. If you develop severe pain after a period of aggressive activity then this should also be a warning sign that the knee joint is not performing optimally

Pain that disturbs your sleep

Sometimes, knee pain can be so severe that your sleep can be severely disturbed. In these instances talking to your orthopedic doctor is the best thing you can do for yourself

Knee looks visually different

In some instances, the knee joint can be so swollen that, on visual inspection, the knee joint may appear different.
Changes in the appearance of your knee can also be a sign of inflammation. Redness, swelling, and inflammation are all signs of knee degeneration.

Limitation in movement

In some instances, you may have difficulty sitting and getting up from a car, this happens because your knee joint refuses to bend. This is a common sign of osteoarthritis. Sometimes the joint catches during movement. This is also a sign of advanced bone disease.

Restriction of activity

The biggest issue with knee osteoarthritis is that you may face limitations in your activity like climbing stairs or tending to the garden.
If you find your daily activity to be limited, then may be its time to consider a knee replacement surgery.

An important point to bear in mind is that not all knee problems require a joint replacement procedure, simple medications, physiotherapy and exercise can also help in most cases of knee replacement.
