What are the causes of shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain can be extremely frustrating as it severely interferes with your day to day life. The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the human body. The shoulder joint is formed by 3 bones and a sheath of muscles called the rotator cuff.

The shoulder joint can get injured with certain types of heavy manual labour, sports activities or some undue movement

The most common cause of shoulder pain is due to rotator cuff tendinitis. This is caused by a swelling in the muscle sheath that is surrounding the shoulder.

Sometimes pain can be referred.

That is a pain due to a problem in the neck can be referred down to the shoulder. Such pain is usually constant and does not aggravate on body movement

Other causes of shoulder pain can include

  1. Rotator cuff tear
  2. Arithritis
  3. Bursitis
  4. Frozen shoulder
  5. A Pinched Nerve
  6. And lastly due to a shoulder dislocation

How to diagnose the cause of a shoulder pain?

Diagnosing the cause of shoulder pain can be complex, your orthopaedic doctor will first do a full fledged physical exam followed by a CT or MRI to assess the exact site of the problem

Common questions your specialist would ask you includes

  1. Is the pain localized to just one shoulder?
  2. Is the pain felt in both shoulders?
  3. Does the pain radiate to other sites of the body?
  4. Are you able to pinpoint the exact location of the pain?
  5. Does the pain increase on certain movements?
  6. Did you have a recent fall?

Shoulder pain may be a medical emergency

Sometimes, a shoulder pain may be a sign of a heart attack, especially if the pain radiates to the jaw and is associated with excessive sweating. Visit the hospital immediately

Shoulder pain treatment:

The treatment of shoulder pain is fairly straightforward. This includes, use of shoulder slings, rest, ice and medications

Surgery for shoulder pain is rarely needed until or unless there is a major fracture

Physiotherapy with the right exercises can also help tremendously
