Now, it is important to understand that any knee problem ultimately results in knee pain and restriction of mobility.
Knee pain can be localized to a specific region of the knee or can be diffuse in nature.
The type and extent of knee pain depends on the actual cause of the pain.
Most knee conditions respond well to therapy though!
Common symptoms of knee pain will be a swelling of the knee joint, difficulty in walking and sometimes the knee just might give away.
Pain may be diffuse or localized to one aspect of the knee.
A tear in the meniscus and ligaments of the knee joint usually results in loss of joint stability and the complaint of the ‘knee giving away’
In fractures, where the long bones forming the joint are involved, even standing up or bearing weight is next to impossible.
Common knee injuries include
1. Direct trauma leading to fracture
2. Arthritis
3. Torn Meniscus or ligaments
4. Dislocation
If you have severe knee pain associated with the following signs below, you should visit your doctor immediately.
1. Swelling and redness
2. Joint instability
3. You are unable to bear weight
4. You are unable to climb stairs
5. You see deformities in the joint
The diagnosis of knee problems are fairly straightforward.
Your orthopedic doctor will usually do a full fledged physical exam of the joint to assess the range of motion.
Next, usually an X-ray will be taken to look at the joint space.
In some instances, your doctor may aspirate fluid from the joint space to rule out a condition called GOUT
Most knee problems can be easily diagnosed and require no major invasive investigations
The treatment of knee pain, ultimately depends on the cause.
Most clinical therapies for knee pain will include
1. Pain killers
2. Tailored Physical therapy
3. Regenerative therapy
4. Lastly surgery
Surgical partial and total knee replacement are always last resort options in the management of knee pain.
Most common knee problems can be easily resolved by medication and physical therapy
It is very important to properly assess and diagnose the cause of the knee pain.
Furthermore delaying treatment only leads to unwanted complications
