Natural Home Remedies for Knee Pain

Natural Home Remedies for Knee Pain Hello! And welcome to One Care Medical Center, Coimbatore’s premier orthopedic hospital. My name is Dr. Salam and I am a full time practicing ortho surgeon in Coimbatore In this short article, we are going to discuss about a few natural home remedies for knee pain. Pain assessment: Pain that is mild to moderate can be treated at home quite successfully. Pain can be caused by a simple sprain or arthritis or sometimes it may be serious. While mild pain need not necessarily signify a serious pathology, severe pain is always due to trauma or injury. Never try to self medicate in case of severe pain. Try RICE therapy If you have twisted or injured your leg after a fall, RICE therapy may be your best bet. RICE= Rest Ice Compression Elevation Tai-Chi Tai-Chi is an ancient Chinese mind-body exercise that greatly improves balance and flexibility. The regular practice of Tai-Chi has been found to be very effective in reducing chronic pain that is often associated with long standing arthritis. Heat/ Cold therapy An alternative application of heat/cold often helps tremendously with joint pain. One important point to remember is to use cold therapy at least in the 1st 24 hours after joint pain (especially in case the pain arises from injury). Use warm therapy, at a later of course Ginger root extract Another natural remedy that can be found to relieve pain is extract from ginger root. Ginger root is a rather common spice used in many traditions. Ginger is known to have some pain relieving properties. Glucosamine & Chondroitin Both these 2 molecules have been advertised to aggressively to greatly improve joint pain due to arthritis. However, studies have found only mild-moderate reduction in joint pain. Of course, before taking any medication for pain, you must consult with your ortho doctor. Some patients usually require at least an X-Ray combined with blood work for finding out the cause of pain.  Reference https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3011108/

What to expect after hip replacement surgery?

What to expect after hip replacement surgery? Hello ! And welcome to One Care Medical Center, an international orthopaedic hospital in Coimbatore. My name is Dr Salam and I am a full time practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Coimbatore. In this blog post we are going to discuss on how painful an actual hip replacement surgery is going to be and also on what you must expect from the surgery. The truth is when, when the hip joint is affected by arthritis, pain can  usually be unbearable. The pain from a worn out joint can affect your day to day activities such as climbing a staircase, getting up from a chair or in general walking. But all said and done, hip replacement surgeries are exceedingly safe. The silver lining in the sky is that, joint replacement procedures are becoming less invasive as well. This is due to the availability of better materials and utilization of newer surgical techniques. The newer techniques, involves placing smaller incisions in the body and also lesser cuts through the muscle and soft tissue, thereby the recovery time is faster. What also more interesting is that, most surgeons have now started using local anaesthesia rather than general anaesthesia allowing safer recoveries for patients. With regional anaesthetics being used more and more frequently, the chances of bleeding are also much lesser. However, in women, the story is slightly different…. Pain management after surgery After undergoing a hip replacement procedure, most likely your pain should have gone. Most individuals report an excellent reduction in pain scores (almost 80%) post surgery. However, the pain of surgery will be there and most patients manage this very well with pain medications that are prescribed. Recovery of course also depends on the presence of other co-existing medical conditions. The presence of Diabetes can slow down recovery significantly. No diabetic patients recover much faster though. Furthermore, if you have not moved your hip for years, the muscles supporting the hip joint also atrophy (they shrink!). This can severely restrict your range of motion. You may never be able to recover your full range of motion if your muscles have not been used for long years before the surgery. All said and done, hip replacement surgeries can positively ease your suffering! While they may not be fun, if you are suffering from hip pain due to arthritis, a hip replacement surgery will definitely help you get back to all your usual activities. Most patients will achieve full recovery with 3 to 6 months post the procedure. Regular physical therapy and sincerely following the advice of your ortho surgeon usually works wonders I hope you enjoyed reading the short blog post!. Pain after Total Knee Replacement

Pain after Total Knee Replacement Hello ! And welcome to One Care Medical Center, an international orthopaedic hospital in Coimbatore. My name is Dr Salam and I am a full time practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Coimbatore. In this blog post we are going to discuss on pain post a knee replacement procedure. For most patients undergoing a total knee replacement procedure, the pain usually completely subsides by 3 to 6 months after the procedure. However, a small proportion of patients will have persistent bothering pain even after 6 months. Interestingly, as much 10 to 34 percent of all patients seem to complain about persistent pain! The very aim of the knee replacement surgery is pain relief but this objective is sometimes not met. Interestingly in older people, the persistence of pain can affect their social relationships severely leading to social isolation. Not just this, the persistence of pain post procedure can also affect employ-ability for the patient. Research had revealed that there are certain risk factors for developing chronic pain. These include A. The presence of poor mental states like anxiety and depression B. The presence of chronic pain elsewhere in the body C. Lastly pain catastrophizing, believing that anticipated pain will be much more severe than it actually is. One thing is clear though, you never want to undergo a repeat and/or revision surgery for chronic pain especially after total knee replacement!. However, in exceptional cases were the implant is misaligned or loosened a revision surgery is recommended. Revision surgery for unexplained pain is clearly NOT INDICATED! Management of Chronic pain There are host of chronic pain management strategies for patients suffering from intractable pain. However, it’s not just the management of pain that is the issue. Patients in pain frequently need constant support from loved ones. There is a definite risk of isolation, more so with increasing age of the patient. A multidisciplinary team based approach to pain management is exceedingly important. A variety of pain medications do exist and can provide some temporary relief for patients. However, the true challenge lies with older patients who may just accept pain as a normal part of ageing and refuse/deny treatments. A combination of physical therapy, psychological counselling and pain medications can help a large number of patients successfully overcome persistent pain symptoms in the long run I hope you enjoyed reading the short article on pain after knee replacement. Can you get both knees replaced at the same time?

Can you get both knees replaced at the same time? Hello! And welcome to One Care Medical Center, an international orthopedic hospital in Coimbatore. My name is Dr. Salam and I am a full time practicing orthopedic surgeon in Coimbatore. In this blog post, we are going to discuss briefly about undergoing a bilateral knee replacement procedure. So here is the thing, arthritis is a painful inflammation of the joints. The truth is the disease process can affect 1 joint or sometimes multiple joints throughout the body. In some instances, the damaging effects may be so severe that knee replacement may be the only option forward. During a typical knee replacement surgery, your orthopedic consultant will replace the broken parts of your knee joint with metallic implants. The implants usually restore lost function to the knee. A knee replacement is usually recommended and done to people in their 60’s, and this is because young people tend to wear out their joints much earlier. A bilateral knee replacement can be done in patients if there is severe arthritis and is recommended specifically to patients who are… A. Fit physicallyB. Who are ready to undergo rehabilitation regularly post the procedure Types of Knee replacement There are two types of double knee replacement. In one type, on the same day, both knees are replaced. In another type, one is replaced followed by another on a different day. The advantage of simultaneous bilateral knee replacement is that, 2 operative procedures are not strictly required and that both procedures can be done in one sitting. However, a caveat is that recovery time are usually longer for such simultaneous knee replacement procedures. Moreover, this type of surgery is not recommended for patients with severe lung or heart disease as such! In a staged bilateral knee replacement, two procedures are done couple of months apart. The advantage, of course, is that overall operative times are less and furthermore, one knee can be allowed to recover before proceeding to operate on the next knee. But the main pitfall is that your overall rehabilitation time with your orthopedic surgeon definitely goes up!. There definitely will be a delay in getting you back to work. Bilateral Knee replacement Recovery With staged knee replacement you will be in the hospital for 3 to 5 days as compared to roughly 2 weeks for double replacement procedure. Pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications will be given to reduce overall pain and discomfort. Your physical therapy will usually begin a couple of hours immediately post the surgery. This is done to speed up your recovery and ensure you get back on your feet. Moreover, physical therapy will usually continue for about 8 to 12 weeks at minimum to speed up movements A variety of exercises are given, ranging from knee strenghtening exercises to exercises to improve flexibility. Your complete recovery should be done by 12 months post which you will be able to resume all your normal activities. What more important to understand is that, your age and overall health will also affect your recovery times. Taking care of your general health along with ensuring a proper diet, avoiding unnessary weight gain often helps tremendously in recovery. 10 Quick Facts About Hip Replacement Hello! And welcome to One Care Medical Center, an international ortho hospital in Coimbatore. My name is Dr. Salam and I am a full time practicing orthopedic surgeon in Coimbatore. In this blog post, I am going to share with you 10 quick facts about undergoing a Hip Replacement procedure Every year on an average close to 300,000 hip replacements is conducted. This is because a deteriorating hip is a constant source of pain and discomfort. Hip arthritis is a very real problem. Here are some quick facts that you should know before undergoing a hip replacement procedure Fact 1 Hip Replacement is often not the first-line treatment for chronic pain. A large number of patients get operated only after conservative medical management has failed. Fact 2 It’s not just hip osteoarthritis, that leads to joint wear and tear, disease conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteonecrosis, and developmental dysplasia can also wreak havoc in the joints. Moreover, broken hip from trauma or fracture can also result in the wear and tear of knee joints. Fact 3 Hip replacements are not just for seniors!. A large number of hip replacement procedures are done on very young individuals. This is because rheumatoid arthritis can affect a large number of young people especially in their early 20’s and 30’s. Osteonecrosis is also a disease of the young, which may require a Hip replacement procedure Fact 4 Choosing the right orthopedic surgeon for your hip replacement procedure is paramount. In fact, its probably more important than the actual nitty-gritty of the procedure itself. Fact 5 There are a variety of prosthetic replacements available for patients. The newest ones are not necessarily the best. For example, studies have found that metal on metal implants do not necessarily translate into long term treatment success. Metal on metal implants was found to have a lot of debris. Fact 6 The type of incision matters!. Newer surgical techniques like using the anterior frontal approach for hip replacement procedures are gaining traction. There is definitely less muscle damage and fascia injury. Most importantly, the overall scarring is very low!. Fact 7 Interestingly, in some places, bilateral hip replacements are being done. A few days post the surgery you will experience pain and/or discomfort. You will require a walker and prolonged sitting in the car is a big NO-NO. Fact 9 Hip replacement procedures are not as painful as most patients would imaging. The usual healing time is about 6 to 8 weeks. The pain usually comes down to rapidly post a physical therapy session. Fact 10 The typical hip replacement procedures last anywhere between 15 to 20 weeks on average.
